Produced in the late 1970s–early 1980s by the Minsk Plastic Products Plant in Belarus (USSR), this elegant souvenir set was created to honor the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The King stands at a 4″ tall, with a 1-3/8″ diameter base, making this one of the most visually striking Soviet plastic sets. Pieces are weighted for excellent play and feel. The forms adhere generally to Staunton principles, while incorporating subtle regional variation in profile and proportion typical of Soviet manufacture. The knights, in particular, reflect a simplified, functional style consistent with mass production intended for institutional or competitive use.
